A Very Angsty Holiday To You

1. Piranesi by Susanna Clarke - I love this little book. You can finish it in one sitting, and it soothed me and brought me peace last year, something we all sorely need during these times. I really think you'd like this book too. It's so hypnotic and wonderful. There's an underlying darkness to the whole thing too.
2. Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke - If you like historical fantasy fiction, this is the opposite end of the spectrum from Piranesi. You can clock someone over the head with this book. It's that big. The characters are all flawed and irritating in the best way, there's a whole magical society, and there's a faerie world!
3. Vicious by V.E. Schwab - Best friends-turned-enemies! Two sides, neither of which are good (it's more morally dubious/bad vs. worse). Interesting superpowers that you get through violent circumstances! Very cinematic and very much something that I liked as someone who likes superhero stuff (though, again, there are no heroes in this story...but that's something I like too).

Now that I look at your listed likes for this stocking, I see that I have written in exactly zero of the canon eras you have listed. However, in my defense, I would like to say that you asked for this.
Have a fic: Packing Heat.
(It is 4,000 words of filthy porn. Also I couldn't quite figure out a set of tags that exactly reflected the content of this story, so I am pretty sure that this is the weirdest use of the tag "Risk Aware Consensual Kink" that has ever existed. Also I got to create a new pairing tag. Hooray.)

Recommending music always feels so iffy to me buuuuut I have two angsty playlists to share: Director Stark Tears, which makes me cry despite being my own playlist; and in the morning Tony Stark will be sober... or dead which definitely has several of the obvious songs one would expect on a 2nd drinking arc playlist but hopefully a few that are new to you as well.
Places: (if I post enough of these, there are probably some you haven't seen before, right?)
- Fairy circles of Namibia
- The painted hills at the John Day fossil beds. I'm mad there's never been a Star Wars movie (or TV show) shot here.
- Lake Hillier, a pink lake in Australia
- Nevada's fly geyser
- The Crooked Forest in Poland
- An abandoned Wizard of Oz park
- Rainbow mountain in Peru
- Leftover Star Wars sets in Tunisia
- Abandoned dinosaur amusement park
SFF:
Maybe I'm recommending things you already know but here goes!
- The Vanishers by Heidi Julavits. Featuring academia, psychic attacks, and lots and lots of women characters.
- Among Others by Jo Walton. Okay maybe this is really popular and everyone already knows it? But if not. This is a story about being young, disabled, nerdy, and new in town. There's also magic, fairies, an evil biological mother, and eventually a scifi/fantasy book club.
- I think that everyone should read Samuel R. Delany if they haven't already. He's a Black queer author who's been writing since the 1950s. My favorites are his space operas, like Nova -- which is a sort of bonkers Grail story that includes a fight on a lava planet and a brain in a jar -- and Babel-17 which is about an API wlw poet and linguist saving everyone through her badassery. Note: his older stuff contains a lot of outdated terms, plus slurs (including words that were considered slurs at time of publishing, plus some that weren't). There's also Dhalgren. I wouldn't say I recommend it, exactly. It's 300k words of experimental 1970s... experimentation. It's about a lot of things, including the process of writing, as well as sexual identity, racial identity, identity generally, cities and urban culture, white flight, and lots more I'm forgetting. There's a chapter called "Palimpsest" that's literally a palimpsest. But also I'd love if someone read Dhalgren because then I could have someone to talk to about it.
- Event Factory by Renee Gladman can be hard to get your hands on but is absolutely worth it. Gladman is a queer Black poet and this novella(?) is about a linguist traveling to an unfamiliar city-city state. It's very much a spiritual successor to Dhalgren.

The Stuff of which Stockings are Made
Then again, for this to be a fic for you, Steve probably got... infected, zombie-fied, or whatever, and turned on Tony, and Tony had to incapacitate and lobotomize him with the knitting needle. So he's not really dead, he's just stashed somewhere alive but destroyed, and needs his brain fixed, a little. He feeds himself and sits blankly, knitting strings of half-raveled stitches.
It's probably called something like "The Darned and the Damned." "Darning Be Damned?" "Damned in the Darning?" "The Stockings Be Damned?"
Uhhhh ok, I'm tired and that's random. And farcical. But also tragic, perhaps? :D
Aaanyway.
Thank you for another year of modding the server and contributing to making it the Fandom Home that it is. And for being a good friend, always offering support and commiseration. I wish there were less to have to commiserate about... but until that day. I long for the world bring you a better relationship with your body, and better than the doctors who seem to get at least as much wrong as right at every turn.
I love Panda, and please give her some of whatever pets and smooches she wants, from me.
Also I'm going to share with you a comics solicit for a series starting this week that I hope is half as good as it sounds:
https://www.previewsworld.com/Catalog/DEC201747
I don't know what the feel and flavor of the comic will end up being, but I also realized that the premise itself seems like it could be a ready-made Steve-Tony fusion. Steve, for whatever reason, has been reduced to this "jumble of organs in a bio-suit," and of course Tony is the mechanic... "Queer monster love story" ensues... yes, PLEASE!
Also, I do have a Witcher fic rec, which has a happy ending, but only after many, many words of *brilliant* and agonizing horror. If you've read it, that's awesome. If you haven't, please have a very horrific and wonderful treat:

I will leave you with these Stocking Season Greetings...

Re: The Stuff of which Stockings are Made
Thank you for the body well-wishes. I wish we didn't live in fleshes. I am so happy to share your friendship and spend many late night hours talking with you. I will smooch Panda all the smooches for you. She wants all of them, and pets. And then more pets.
This solicit looks SUPER up my twisted little alley. Like. Wow, yeah.
SEASON GREETINGS. I hope you have a good 2021, wynne. <3
Re: The Stuff of which Stockings are Made
Also that Hollow Heart comic - I should be picking up issue #1 this Wednesday...
Did you ever read Lonely Receiver, with the intensely dysfunctional lesbian human/AI relationship? It's a verrrrry weird comic that goes a lot of directions, but I thought it was really cool.
And same author, Zac Thompson, has a new one out called "I Breathed a Body" that I wasn't going to read because one facet of it is about social media, and I'm kind of tired of social media stuff, but then the body horror and weirdness of it sucked me in anyway, and I liked the first issue A LOT.
I also wish we did not have the requirement of living in fleshes. My fleshes has super contradictory needs that leave me not knowing how to help it be a happy fleshes so I can be a happy being living in this fleshes.
MORE PETS and smooches for Panda. RooRooRooRooWOOF, Panda! Am I speaking her language, very poorly? :D
Season's Greetings, Season's geekings... so many wishes for a better year for this world...

I think you might enjoy listening to Muse.

Tony crawls, and he cries, and makes a mess of himself on the floor. It’s pathetic, is what it is. Self-pity at its best. What does he think will come out of it? No one will come to rescue him. He dug his own grave and now he’s complaining that it’s too deep. He won’t get any help for his injuries if he doesn’t call the guards.
Steve realises he miscalculated when Tony stops moving.
Tony doesn’t want to get help, Steve thinks. Tony has been waiting for this moment.
Tony has been waiting since their last fight. Tony wasn’t bluffing when he told Steve to finish it. Wasn’t trying to rile Steve up when he told him to put his money where his mouth was. He was asking for it, plain and simple, and Steve didn’t even realise Tony was serious.
How couldn’t he have realised? He knows, he knows that Tony doesn’t value his life as high as he should. But it’s been so easy to stop looking past the anger, to stop caring about Tony, and somehow Tony wanting to die has taken Steve by surprise.
Isn’t this what they both want?
Doesn’t Steve want Tony dead as much as Tony wants to stop living? Isn’t this what Steve was thinking when he raised his shield up, up, up, and hovered on the impossible peak, one push away from killing the most important person in his life?
Steve never wanted to kill Tony.
He can try to convince himself all he wants, but the truth is that he’s incapable of hating Tony. Instead, he turns and twists and burns whatever he feels for Tony and turns it into a weapon against him. It’s not fair, that Tony holds so much power over Steve. It’s not fair that he decided to destroy the superhero community because of his own debilitating guilt. Not fair that he dragged everyone into his quest for self-flagellation. He fucked everyone over.

I think you might like the Machineries of Empire trilogy? I think that Jedao is the sort of insane genius yet fascinating character that I also think you'd enjoy. Otherwise I know that Sine likes this a lot too but Murderbot is so much fun and an entire mood.
