616 angst
Tony’s body is nearly sliced in half. Steve removes the gun from the holster and sets the barrel to Tony's forehead. He's crying. His head spins, but he ignores it and tries to shove down the bile rising from his throat. "I’m sorry, Tony, I have to," he whispers, unable to recognize his voice.
“Steve —”
“I have to,” Steve insists. If he drags this any longer, Tony will be in more pain.
“It’s alright,” Tony says. Steve thinks he tries to reach out, but he can’t because he’s dying. There’s blood oozing from his mouth and nose. “Steve, it’s —”
The wind is picking up now, and for a beat, he wants to put the gun down and cradle Tony's bloody face, but he can't because Tony's intestines are slipping out of him.
This is what he must do. This is the best he can do.
Steve clicks off the safety then pulls the trigger.
He returns to the bunker. When they ask him about where Tony is, he tries to shrug, and it's a broken mechanical thing. His limbs aren't working. They're too heavy. He has grime on his face and his fingernails are filled with dirt and blood.
With every exhale, he smells the damp soil of where he buried Tony's body.
It's just a supply run. Trite. They could have sent anyone else out. But instead, Carol decides that it will be both of them. Something about teamwork. Doesn't she know that he and Tony can't stand to be in the same room without breaking down? Doesn't she understand that if you send out men on a mission, they have to trust each other? To watch each other's six. Not for one of them to straddle the other in the ruins of a burning city, a shield held up high for a kill.
"They got to him," is all Steve says.

For AI-related scifi, have you read Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy? Ancillary Justice is the first one. It’s about a she/her AI who used to be a spaceship and have many bodies and finds herself confined to a single body. She’s on a quest for vengeance. Also, she really misses her captain.
Some other sff I like:
- The Vanishers by Heidi Julavits. Featuring academia, psychic attacks, and lots and lots of women characters.
- Among Others by Jo Walton. Okay maybe this is really popular and everyone already knows it? But if not. This is a story about being young, disabled, nerdy, and new in town. There’s also magic, fairies, an evil biological mother, and eventually a scifi/fantasy book club.

If this is the result of me giving you armour pics, I will flood you with them. My gosh, I still can't believe you drew this for me. Thank you so much.
Thank you also for the SF recs! I haven't heard of any of them, so they'll be on my to-read list! I'm very excited after reading your summaries.

Murderbot (Martha Wells) is the obvious SF story/novel series to rec these days as it deals with a whole lot of things about robots/AI. Murderbot is awesome.
Catfishing on CatNet (Naomi Kritzer) and the related short story Cat Pictures Please (which is freely available at that link) is about an AI who really really likes cats. And also sometimes catfishes people.
The Imperial Radch series by Ann Leckie has a main character who is, most of the time, a spaceship. You've probably read it. It's pretty great.
I'm going a little more obscure with a robot TV rec, which is Almost Human, a buddy-cop SF show that lasted about a season on Fox a few years back. Karl Urban is the human, and Michael Ealy is his android partner, and together they fight crime, and also Karl Urban's character IIRC comes to accept that robots are cool, really.

Stockings in Stock!
I don't have a book rec, but I have two comics recs that might meet your interests. One finished recently, and it's a 5-issue miniseries called Lonely Receiver, by Zac Thompson (writer) and Jen Hickman (art). It's about the degeneration of a relationship between a woman and her custom-designed "lifetime companion" AI. It's very weird and surreal, and there's kink, angst, and definitely AI and transhumanism! There will probably be a trade paperback available in the relatively near future, but I can also point you to where to read it online, if you want.

The other comic is about to begin - it's called Hollow Heart, and says it is a "queer monster love story" about an individual who used to be human, but now is "a jumble of organs in a bio-suit," and the mechanic brought in to work on the suit. I am not familiar with this writer or artist, but the premise grabbed me immediately, and I'm really excited to read it, starting with the first issue this coming week!

(In fact, that basic description sounds like it could make an amazing fusion with Steve and Tony - Steve either having "come back wrong" out of the ice, or being gravely injured, and either way, kept alive by this "suit," and of course Tony being the mechanic...)
I wish you health and finding some happy times in these difficult times, and send you Stocking Season Greetings!

It's been fun working alongside you on the stevetony angst fills. I remember some of yours very clearly, I was impressed of how much you managed to say in the little amount of words you used. Seasonal greetings to you too!

- The Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells is, from what I hear, a lot of fun, and the sixth book is coming out in April
Haha editing this because I saw sine rec Murderbot (I think she's the reason I found out about it)...but hopefully that means it's good if people are talking about it!
