There’s something weird going on with Steve. Clint hasn’t put his finger on what just yet, but he’s not called Hawkeye for nothing. When he’s locked onto a target, nothing escapes him.
He looks at Steve surreptitiously over his coffee mug. Steve’s just as annoyingly chipper as ever, humming to himself as he fries an ungodly amount of bacon and eggs for breakfast. The dampness of his shirt collar tells Clint that he’s already gone on his morning run and showered. Nothing out of the ordinary, and yet…
Steve stretches out his hand to grab the salt, his shirt riding up the slightest bit. Clint lazily glances at the strip of skin that peeks out over the waistband. What, a guy can look.
And that’s when he sees it. It’s unmistakable. But surely…
He thinks about it for all of two seconds before he opens his mouth.
“Looks like you had a fun night.”
He doesn’t get the satisfaction of seeing Steve freeze, but there is a slight hitch in his movements. Clint’ll take the win. Score one for Hawkeye.
“I stayed in yesterday, Clint. We ate dinner together.”
Steve has put on his reasonable-leader-of-the-Avengers voice, as if it’s enough to distract from the fact that he definitely has a hickey on his hip. Clint’s impressed, honestly. Either Steve snuck out in the middle of the night, or he managed to smuggle someone inside Avengers Tower without anyone noticing. Clint’s bet is on option one.
“That doesn’t say anything about what you did during the night, Cap. Come on, give me something,” he wheedles.
He knows he’s doing a pathetic job as an interrogator, thank you very much. But this is juicy gossip.
“There’s nothing to tell, Clint. Drop it.”
Oh, great. Straight into Captain-America-is-disappointed-in-you-voice. Good thing Clint’s built up a resistance to that voice after his first few months as an Avenger, years ago. There’s no way in hell that he’ll drop this. But he knows when to make a tactful retreat.
He shoots off a two-fingered salute and backs out of the kitchen, still clutching his coffee mug.
“Sure thing, Cap. Toodles.”

So Steve got laid. Now, the question is: was it a one-time thing, or did he get a new girlfriend? Can’t be Sharon, Bobbi would have known. Probably not any other old flame of Steve’s, they’re all off the radar. So, someone new. Maybe a nice girl he met while doing Steve things. Probably he wants to ease her into the cape craziness and that’s why he hasn’t mentioned her. To anyone
Steve doesn’t do one-night stands. Not Captain America. Clint might cry if it turns out he does.
Anyways. Clint needs to find out more so that he can back up his claims when he dishes out the gossip at the next Avengers meetup.
After having sent out some feelers to his contacts (other full- or part-time Avengers who won’t snitch to Steve), he settles for some good old observation.
Steve’s staying over at the Tower pretty often, but that’s to be expected since he’s the current leader of the team. He gets up earlier than Clint, does some working out, eats breakfast, does Captainly things for a while, then lunch, then more working out, then more Steve things, then dinner. Sometimes he has to leave for meetings with SHIELD or other organizations, but he does most of the Avengers admin and planning in the Tower. Usually with Tony.
When the hell is he seeing his mystery girlfriend? It can’t all be during the night.
And Clint knows he’s still seeing her, because Steve keeps showing up with hickeys.
Oh, he’s almost smooth about it, sure. They usually fade away before noon, thanks to the serum, and since most Avengers are either still sleeping or not at the Tower yet at that time, no one else sees them. But Clint does.
Peeking out over the waistband of his running shorts. Creeping up the side of his neck. On one bicep, for some reason. Low on his stomach. Even lower. Clint didn’t really get a good look, because when Steve saw him he put on his t-shirt again, but yeah. It was worth dragging himself out of bed to see Steve in full shirtless work-out glory. With a rather scandalous trail of hickeys down his torso.
Clint would make a joke about vampires, except he’s not sure that Steve wouldn’t get with a vampire. Regardless, he’d really like to meet whoever is enthusiastically trying to leave a mark on Steve. Kudos for trying. Steve probably doesn’t mind either, if it keeps happening.

They’re in the middle of a probably very important meeting, but Clint can’t for the life of him concentrate on the report on the newest intergalactic smuggling ring (sorry, Carol). It’s simply not possible. Not when Steve is sitting right there in front of him, pretending like he doesn’t have a hickey half-hidden beneath the neckline of his suit.
A hickey. And it’s 4pm.
Judging by the color, it’s very recent. Maybe even less than an hour old. Which makes absolutely no sense, because an hour ago they were just done fighting Mole Man. There’s no way that Steve found time to canoodle with anyone between then and now.
Except he clearly did.
And he would have kept it secret, if he hadn’t removed his cowl soon after the start of the meeting. Has he forgotten about it? Or maybe he doesn’t care?
It’s only a matter of time before anyone else clocks it, though. Especially since Clint knows he’s staring.
He glances around. Natasha is… doing her nails? Thor is sitting regally. Jess has eyes only for Carol, big surprise.
Tony, though. Tony’s staring right at Steve, and pretty… intensely, at that. Yup, he’s seen the hickey alright. Steve seems to notice, because he shifts a little, eyes flitting around and never quite landing on Tony. He clears his throat, then puts his cowl on again.
Clint glances at Natasha. She’s sending him a “Can you believe this?” look, and honestly, same. Tony’s still staring at Steve like a creep. Why can’t they ever be normal at each other?

The report ends abruptly when Mole Man tries to escape SHIELD custody, and they all rush out to stop the Moloids from coming to his rescue, any thoughts regarding hickeys promptly disappearing from Clint’s mind.
He circles back to them a few days later, though. He can’t let it go. It feels like he already has all the pieces of the puzzle that is Steve’s love life, but he just can’t see the whole picture.
If Steve manages to get some on the regular, including in the middle of the day sometimes, it has to be someone who’s readily available. Someone who Steve could spend a lot of time with, without it being overtly suspicious. Someone he already spends a lot of time with. A SHIELD agent? It wouldn’t be the first time Steve ends up with someone from his working place, so to speak. Except why would Steve keep the relationship hidden?
Clint can’t make any sense of it.
He’s also running on forty hours without sleep, but that’s neither here nor there. Maybe he should try the direct approach again, see if Steve’s loosened up a bit. If he drags his ass up to the kitchen, he might even catch Steve before he goes on his run. And if that doesn’t work, Clint can go to bed, and hopefully he’ll wake up with a fresh mind.
As he trudges through the corridor, he hears voices coming from the kitchen. One of them is Steve’s warm baritone. Perfect.
He steps through the door and stops dead.
Steve’s against the counter, one hand pressed against it for support, the other fisted tight in Tony’s hair. Tony, who’s the one pushing Steve against the counter, hands on his hips and mouth latched onto Steve’s throat. As Clint stares, Tony very delicately takes the skin next to Steve’s Adam’s apple between his teeth and starts biting. Steve lets out a sound that is anything but decent.
“Tony, honey, you’ve made your point,” he gasps, making no move to stop Tony.
A few things click into place very fast in Clint’s head.
Steve doesn’t have a new girlfriend, he has a new boyfriend. Who is Tony Stark, who lives in the Tower and works with Steve, and definitely has the time to neck him after missions. Who likes to give Steve giant hickeys.
“Uh.”
Two heads whip around to face him, twin looks of surprise on their faces. They all gape at each other for a few moments, Steve’s cheeks steadily getting redder.
Tony, perhaps unsurprisingly, is the first one to recover.
“Hi, Clint. You look like shit.”
He hasn’t moved away from Steve.
It’s all a bit more than Clint’s brain can handle.
“You.” He points his finger at Tony. “You’re the one who’s been mauling Cap. What even.”
Tony takes on an affronted look, which worsens when Steve chokes on a laugh.
“I’ve been going crazy, trying to see who the hell was leaving hickeys all over Steve, and it turns out it’s you? Congrats, but also, why?”
"Are you trying to kinkshame me, is that what you're doing?" Tony starts, puffing up. He deflates when Steve raises an eyebrow at him.
Tony clears his throat. He has a distinctly sheepish look, now.
“Ok. So. He may or may not have been asked out a week ago when he was on a run, and of course I couldn't let that—”
Clint’s not listening anymore. Figures Tony would get possessive. After all, he never likes it when people touch his things.

When the Lights Go On Again by elspethdixon & seanchai, an epic 200k+ alien invasion story. It is SOOOOO good as a story overall, and the Steve/Tony is so tender. I remember staying up until 6 AM to finish this the first time I read it.
Sentinel Event by truthiness_aura. A very lovely CapWolf fic that's really more about Steve realizing he's in love with Tony because of all his new wolfy senses and instincts
