Happy stockings, Jen! <333 Thanks for always sharing great art and always sending my EG feelings into resurgence. We are never safe!! Best of luck with school, and I'm glad we can still get to catch up every now and then! Anyway, have a little post-Endgame-everyone-lives fluff!

“Good morning, Morgan.”

“Hi Cap,” Morgan said automatically. She walked up next to Steve, peering around his elbow at the stovetop. “Why are you here?”

Steve froze. The eggs continued their sizzle.

“I like them sunny side up,” Morgan observed.

“They’re…already scrambled. I can make new ones.”

“It’s okay. Hey, why are you here? Last night, you told me you’d see us on Thursday when the Young Avengers have training.” If Morgan had known Steve was still going to say, she never would have gone to sleep at her bedtime. Steve was way easier than Dad to convince to give her some illicit late-night snacks, and Dad was already miles easier than Mom.

“I ended up staying the night.”

“Oh, how come? Is your bike broken? Can I see it?”

“Oh, no, it’s fine. I ended up staying up late with your dad, so it was too late to go back then…”

“Oh.” You could do that? Just stay late enough and then you couldn’t go home? Morgan needed to try that next time she stayed over at her friend’s. Not that Happy would ever show up a minute past their agreed play date time. Morgan looked up at Steve again. “But you didn’t even bring a backpack. When I go to sleepovers with Dani, Mom makes me pack at least three pairs of underwear.”

“Your dad had an extra toothbrush.”

“Yeah, but you’re too big for his clothes. You can’t wear the same clothes again. That’s gross.”

The corner of Steve’s mouth quirked as he tugged at his two-day-old shirt. “I’ve said the same to your dad. But look at me now.”

“Were you watching a movie or something?”

“No.” Steve’s face was turning pink. “We were…just talking.”

“You’ve never stayed the night before though, and you talk all the time.” If anything, Morgan had overhead Dad insist almost every time Cap was here that he should bring an overnight bag, so that he wouldn’t have to leave so early. Even adults wanted sleepovers with their friends. Except Steve always declined, and said that he preferred his own bed. Except this time, Steve did sleep over, but he didn’t even remember his bag! He wasn’t thinking very much ahead, for Captain America!

“Last night was…different.” Steve was smiling now, that soft dopey smile that he used with Dad all the time.

“Good-different?”

“Yeah. Good-different.” His face had gone past pink all the way to red. That was a relief. There was good-different, like Morgan growing old enough to go to school with her friends every day, and then there was bad-different, like when Mom and Dad told her she was going to live in two houses now, one with Mom and one with Dad.

“Good morning, my two favorite humans.”

“Hi, Dad!” Dad squeezed her around her shoulders as she hugged him around the waist. Dad exclaimed.

“Morning-after coffee? You are the best, Cap.”

Tony,” Steve said, looking right at Morgan, who tried to puzzle out what bad word Dad had said. It didn’t sound like anything bad – if anything, he had said nothing but nice things about Steve, which didn’t happen all the time. Even if most of the time, when Dad said bad things about Steve, it was in his jokey way that made everyone, but most importantly, Steve, smile.

“That’s my name,” Dad said, with a wink. “You don’t want to wear it out again. Morgan, hon, can you get glasses of milk for you and Steve?”

“Sure!” Morgan said. She didn’t know Steve drank milk like her, and not coffee like Mom, Dad, Happy, and Uncle Rhodey. She beamed at Steve’s back, although he couldn’t see her.

As the three of them bustled around the kitchen, getting breakfast ready, and both Dad and Steve grinning at nothing in particular, like they were just happy to be alive, Morgan decided that Steve could have as many sleepovers as he wanted, if it meant mornings like this.

I'm still in class so I will leave you a longer comment later - thank you, Magic, this is amazing! 💜

Morgan's POV is fantastic, and I love the little details that tell us more about Steve/Tony and also Morgan's dynamic with Steve (funny how we both have Morgan & Steve ideas for each other, hehe).

The post EG feels/ideas will never end!

Hi Jen! "trapped together and forced to have difficult conversations" really caught my eye, next thing I know I'm spilling out 616 stevetony feelings and conversation. Hope you enjoy my take on it. :) PS. Writng this inadvertantly got me back into reading comics after a bit of time away, so thanks! I'm really enjoying it.

_____

“This isn’t funny guys!” Tony yelled, banging his fist against the concrete wall.

“I don’t think they can hear you,” Steve said dryly. “Or if they can, they’re not listening.”

“Do you want to be stuck here?” Tony snarled, spinning around to face Steve. It was irritating how calm and composed he was.

“Of course I don’t!” Steve fired back—which yes, that’s what Tony thought he would say, what he himself felt—but it still stung, somehow. “But we are. All we can do is wait it out.”

Oh, of course. Calm, patient Steve Rogers. Never one to get mad at his teammates and fly off the handle. Unless it was Tony who’d done something wrong, of course. Then he’d start yelling in a split second.

But his team, the people Steve commanded, deciding to finally stop joking about locking the two of them together, and actually doing it? Steve doesn’t bat an eye. Was perfectly content to just wait it out. Fucking typical.

“This isn’t just, we’ll let you out tomorrow, after we’ve made you suffer for a bit. They said they weren’t letting us out until we’ve worked through all our problems. All of them, Steve!

Steve laughed, a bitter mirthless sound. “You don’t think we can do it? Think they’ll give up on us first?”

Tony growled. Steve was such a son of a bitch sometimes. “Look around you, they’ve planned this and they’re not letting us out!” There were mattresses, plenty of covers, spare clothes, food, and a door that Tony had discovered led to a bathroom. Like seriously what the fuck was wrong with their teammates?!

“It’s frustrating I’ll give you that, but you’re kind of freaking out. You’ve been in worse situations.”

“Not really.”

Really?” Steve sounded affronted. “I’m worse than the Mandarin?”

Well. “Kinda.”

“Nice,” Steve scoffed. “Better start making my plans for world domination, I guess.”

“What do you want me to say, Steve? The Mandarin hates me, but he’s evil, so that doesn’t really bother me so much. I expect it from villains. The hate, the disdain, the disappointment in me for being such a wretched human being. Not from my best friend. Not the man I—” Tony broke off swiftly. He might’ve been spilling far too much truth right now, but he couldn’t say that. Couldn’t bear to have that thrown back in his face.

“Tony.”

“I'm just saying. Not really in the mood for any more of your accusations right now while we work out our issues. You never see my side of things anyway.”

That was followed by a long silence, and Tony started walking around the room, inspecting all the goods their so-called friends had stuffed in here. They really were serious about this, it seemed. Things had been pretty tense lately, they clearly didn’t want another Civil War on their hands.

“I don’t hate you.” Steve said quietly from somewhere behind Tony.

“Sure as hell feels like it sometimes.”

Tony heard Steve walking up behind him. “I don't understand why you do things.”

“You never take the time. You make these snap judgements, and you never consider… that I might’ve had a good reason. Even if it’s not what you would’ve done.”

Steve sighed, his head falling onto Tony’s shoulder, and to his surprise, Tony didn’t even feel the urge to shrug him off. But it felt like it was Steve Rogers, his friend, reaching out to him now. Not the intractable Captain America who he so often butted heads with.

“I just wish you’d talk to me about what you’re planning sometimes, so I might have some kind of say or opinion or anything. I’m always finding out after it’s already done, and all I can do is react. And I usually don’t like what you’ve done.”

“I know.”

“I take it personally. When you’re not who I think you should be.”

“You do.”

“I just expect—”

“Why?” Tony asked, turning around to face Steve, needing to look at him for this. “Why do you expect me to act or think or be remotely like you? When have I ever pretended I was anything other than exactly what I am?”

“Never.”

“Exactly. So what is this standard you’re holding me up against? And why am I constantly failing?”

“I—” Steve looked around, like he might find the answer amongst all of the supplies around them. “The same one I hold myself to. I fail too, sometimes. But I’m always trying my best to reach it.”

“And I’m not.” Tony shrugged. “I’m not trying to, so I never will. Either you can accept that, or you can’t.”

Steve stared at him for several beats, but didn’t answer. The uncertainty plain to see on his face.

“Still don’t know yet, huh? That’s great.”

“I’m sorry. I want to give you the answer you want, but it’s not that easy.”

“No of course not. Because I’m not interested in being as principled as you. Because I will always save as many people as possible in whatever means necessary, and that makes me the bad guy. Even though you’ll give anyone a chance, even villains, as long as they’re working for the side of good today, yet I never get a pass! I’m just the worst of everyone!”

“Of course you’re not.”

“Then what is it, Steve? You don’t need everyone else to be like you, why me? What makes me so damn special?

“Are you kidding? What makes you special? Everything, Tony! Everything makes you special! You’re not like everyone else to me! You’re more. They’re just—necessary for the mission, to save lives. To do what we do. If they step out of line? They face the consequences, I’d be a little disappointed but it wouldn’t affect me. But when it’s you? Do I compromise my own sense of right and wrong when you just do whatever you want? Let you get away with it because of how much I care about you?”

Tony scoffed. “We both know you’d never ever do that. Nothing worse than you having to compromise your values. You’re everyone’s true north. The moral compass of our time. You don’t let me get away with shit.”

“Tony.”

“What? Am I supposed to respond with a fucked up confession of my own? Just slip it in there how important you are to me as I complain about how difficult you are? Is that what we’re doing now?”

“I don’t know what we’re doing.” Steve sounded exhausted. “Whenever we talk, it always seems to make things worse. Just once, I wish we could make it better.”

The heat of Tony’s anger dissipated. He wished that too. No matter what they did they always seemed to go round and round in circles, learning new pieces of information, but never solving anything. Never feeling like they understood each other better. Or their relationship had improved.

They just… tore each other to pieces, and felt broken in the aftermath.

“Yeah. Me too.”

“What if we tried?” Steve asked, expression hopeful.

“What do you mean?”

“We’re stuck here right? This is why we’re here. So let’s… sit down,” Steve walked over and sat down on one of the mattresses, leaning with his back against the wall. “Standing is too confrontational. Come over here.”

Tony cautiously walked closer, lowering himself next to Steve. “Now what?”

“We talk.”

“About?” There was a lot.

“All of it. Every little thing we’ve ever fought about. Let’s hash it out.”

“That’ll take a really long time.”

“I’ve got nothing but time, how about you?” Steve said, painfully earnest like he always was when he really believed in something.

“And what’s to stop us doing the same thing we always do?”

Steve held out his pinky finger with a teasing smile. “Promise to listen, even when we think the other one is wrong?”

Tony rolled his eyes with exasperation, but linked his pinky with Steve’s, shaking them up and down. “Pinky swear,” he drawled.

So they talked. And talked and talked and talked. It was exhausting, and frustrating, and painful.

But they didn’t start yelling. They listened. It felt like mending, instead of tearing. Until finally they were completely talked out, and Tony’s head was leaning against Steve’s shoulder, his head resting against Tony’s. He was thinking that maybe they ought to lie down, when the door creaked open, startling them awake.

Natasha walked into the center of the room, evaluating them with her probing stare. “I’ve been asked to check if you’ve worked it all out and are better now, not my words.”

“And where are the instigators of this scheme?” Tony demanded, still irritated at being locked in anywhere he couldn’t get out.

Natasha shrugged. “They’re cowards. They sent me.”

“Well we’ve worked it all out, right buddy?” Tony threw his arm over Steve’s shoulder, his most sincere smile on his face.

“Really.”

“Right Steve?”

“Completely.” He agreed.

“Okay. Sure, fine, whatever. Come on out, I guess.”

They followed Natasha out of the room, the building, and back out onto the street. They waved goodbye to Natasha, and then turned to stare at each other.

“If only it was that easy, huh?” Tony asked wryly. If one conversation made it all better.

Steve chuckled. “If only.” He paused. “It was a good start, don’t you think?”

Tony sighed. “I’m still me, Steve. I’m always going to be me.”

“Yeah, you are. And we’ll probably find ourselves at odds again.”

“Probably lots of times.”

“Our relationship would be a lot simpler if we had normal lives.”

“We wouldn’t even know each other if we had normal lives,” Tony pointed out.

“And wouldn’t that be a real shame?”

Tony smiled. Steve smiled back.

“We’ll find our way, Steve.” Tony believed it too, which said a lot about the progress they’d made.

“Promise?”

“Yes, Steve. I promise.”

The undercurrent of everything they weren’t talking about weighed heavily in that moment, but for now this was enough. They needed to be friends again first. Before anything else.

Heya Jen <3

In no particular order:
Nnedi Okorafor - Binti - Afrofuturism, spec fiction, novella
The Book of Magic anthology edited by Gardner Dozois - themed around wizards, there'll be at least a few stories you like in there, I hope.

Brandon Sanderson - Stormlight Archive series - he tends towards long books from what I've read, but they're good! lots of worldbuilding and arching plots
Tamora Pierce - Tortall universe and Emelan universe - historical fantasy with magic and friendship and quests destiny etc
Diane Duane - The Young Wizards series - wizardry and world building (no boarding school)
Dianna Wynne Jones - Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Air, House of Many Ways (trilogy), she was very prolific so if you like her style after those 3, then dive into the rest of her stuff!
Erin Morgenstern - The Night Circus - urbanish fantasy?
V.E. Schwab - The Shades of Magic series and their other stuff

Hope something strikes your fancy!

Jennn, I think you'll like these recs:

- Il Mare - yes, there's an American remake that I never watched and yes, this movie isn't perfect, but if you think of it as a Steve/Tony AU....*sigh* <3

- You probably read Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series, but if you haven't, PLEASEEEEEE read it and love and cry over Lyra and Will with me.

- Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo - Okay, so I was dying to read this for a while and for some reason, I'm not emotionally connecting with it, BUT a lot of people love it and I think the prose is good. It's a W/W historical romance featuring a Chinese American girl who grew up in San Francisco's Chinatown and in 1954, explores her sexuality and falls in love with her classmate and friend

- Pride is a lovely film inspired by a real event where a group of queer activists decide to support striking miners in the longest strike in the UK's history during the '80s. Really, really lovely and a reminder of what can happen when you have solidarity

- The Way He Looks is a cute coming-of-age Brazilian M/M film featuring a romance that blossoms between a blind boy and a new classmate who quickly becomes his best friend

These are such great recs, thank you!! I bought Last Night at the Telegraph Club in audiobook format a couple of months ago and I've been wanting to read it - I'll let you know what I think once I get to it!

I will definitely check out the movies (and likely flail about Steve/Tony AU with you for Il Mare 👀)

I have read the HDM series but it's been a while, I remember enjoying them a lot :)

Hi Jen 💙

So excited to finally share this with you! I decided to write Steve and Tony getting stuck on the roof of the tower during the Avengers’ New Year’s party for you, hope you enjoy 🤭

What About Now. MCU. 2563 words. Teen Rated.
"Eh," Tony says with a shrug, "I’ll find someone to kiss, don’t you worry about me, Cap." He cocks his head, biting his lower lip. The intent look on his face is rarely a good sign for Steve. "While we’re at it," Tony asks, all casual, "who are you planning on kissing, hm?"

Steve winces. "No one?"

Tony’s mouth drops open. "You have to!"

Steve has to laugh at the scandalized expression on his face. "I have to? Says who?"

"Uh, me? This is my New Year’s party. Getting smooched is, like, a prerequisite. Everyone knows that."

Hi! :D

Seeing as you said you wanted SF/F short story recs and you like the BBC Merlin show, I feel like if you like general Arthuriana fiction you will probably very much enjoy Nicola Griffith's fantasy novella Spear which is basically a retelling of Percival and the Grail story except in this one Percival's actually a lesbian. I liked it, anyway.

Happy stockings day!

I have a sff short story rec: State Change (https://kenliu.name/stories/state-change/) by Ken Liu. I read one of his short story collections and this is one of my favorites. Plus, I think it’s an awesome AU setting for fanfic. The story is partially inspired by daemons from His Dark Materials, and I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how my various blorbos would fit into this world. If you see it and have any ideas for Steve and Tony, I’d love to hear your thoughts! (I have an angsty idea for Tony, no fluffier ideas, and nothing particularly interesting has come to my mind for Steve…)

Since you love fake dating, you’ve probably already read Alexis Hall’s Boyfriend Material, a mlm fake dating romance. If you haven’t I for sure recommend it! I adore the characters. I’ve read a lot of Alexis Hall and have other recs for his stuff, if you’re interested (as well as a couple I personally disliked).

Since I think I recall that you also are into regency stuff, I have to recommend my favorite romance author, K.J. Charles. She has a ton of mlm regency novels (and a few wlw ones, though they’re mostly novellas or short stories) as well as romance in other eras of British history. My very favorite of hers of all time is A Seditious Affair. All the porn in it is consensual nonconsent that isn’t discussed very much, which may not be your thing, but there’s also identity porn which I know is. It’s technically the 2nd book in a trilogy of books about characters who all know each other, but can definitely be read first. Alternately, if you don’t enjoy CNC you can also skip this book and read the others in the series for some fantastic mlm regency romance without that particular kink.

If you’re looking for more of Steve/Tony kinda dynamic, her Will Darling adventures are early 20th century and are about Will: a giant himbo soldier of a man whose main method of problem-solving is punching people, and his love interest Kim: a rich, secret intelligence agent who is constantly making decisions between an option that is terrible and will fuck lots of people over and an even worse option that will fuck over even more people. They fight a lot about the meaning of honesty and justice!

Her Magpie Lord series is from early in her writing career, and while I still like those books, I think her writing has matured a lot. The main pairing in that series has major Harry/Draco vibes, particularly in that the short dark one is a very powerful wizard. A standalone novel, Jackdaw, is actually my favorite from that world, and has more Remus/Sirius vibes.

Hi, happy stockings day to you too <3

Thank you for all these great recs!! I've read a short story of Ken Liu's before and enjoyed his prose, now I know where to start for more.

I've heard of Boyfriend Material and it's on my TBR list, glad to hear you enjoyed it! (Your most recent 3490 fic was loosely inspired by one of Alexis Hall's books, right?)

Also have heard of K.J. Charles for regency M/M romance, but their back-list is so extensive I wasn't sure where to begin, I think from your description I'll start with the Will Darling series :)

Here's a rec in return: I recently read Two Rogues Make a Right by Cat Sebastian (technically the third book in a series but stands alone well enough), it has lots of hurt/comfort and pining between old friends.

Yes, my 3490 fic was based on Alexis Hall's A Lady for a Duke, which I also recommend! (A trans woman fakes her own death in the Napoleonic wars, then returns to England as a woman. She moves in with her brother, who now has her title, and her brother's wife. The novel starts when they go to visit her old friend, who is mourning the man he knew her as, not knowing that his friend is still alive.) Contemporary romances are not usually my preference, which is part of why a lot of Hall's stuff is not my fave, but Boyfriend Material is one of my favorite contemporaries. Its sequel, Husband Material, is out but I haven't read it yet and my friends who read it were not impressed, so make of that what you will.

Yay, I hope you enjoy Will Darling!

Thank you for the rec! I've read and loved some Cat Sebastian and thought I'd read all her stuff, but I somehow missed Two Rogues Make a Right. Thank you, I've added it to my TBR list!
