Happy Valentine's Day, IL! Oh boy, oh boy, do I have a queer show rec for you. Hm. Actually, chances are you might have checked this out already, but if you haven't watched Severance, I'd give it a shot. Angst! Self-hatred! Identity porn! Memory loss! And it features a major gay relationship that is integral to the plot. If you don't know what the show is about, here's the premise so you don't accidentally see spoilers:

A biotechnology corporation, Lumon Industries, uses a mindwipe medical procedure called "severance" to separate the consciousness of their employees between their lives at work and outside of it. One severed employee, Mark, gradually uncovers a web of conspiracy.

It's dark and mysterious and just. SO. GOOD.

And if you haven't checked out AMC's Interview With the Vampire yet, which you probably have because it feels like everyone watched it when the first season aired while I just got around to watching it, it ticks off a lot of your likes too. Louis and Lestat have such a messed up relationship and they're equally fascinating in their own ways. I'm not familiar with the books or the 90s film, but I do know that a lot of people who like both really dig this adaptation because the characters are very much the book characters' in essence and the adaptation adds something fresh to the mix because of the changes they made (making Louis a Black man in the American South at the turn of the 20th century, for example).

I haven't actually seen either of these. I've heard about Interview with a Vampire before but never checked it out. Severance I'd only vaguely heard of and didn't know it was angsty and queer and you have definitely peaked my interest. Thanks so much for the recs 💕

Oh!!!! Yes, I feel like IWTV is 100% up your alley and Severance is this slowwwww burn mystery with lots of liminal space vibes. If you need to sign up for a free trial (I think both AMC+ and Apple TV have a 7-day free trial), IWTV has 7 episodes and Severance has 9 so you can get through them easily and then cancel so you don't have to pay to watch them. :D Let me know if you do end up checking them out! IWTV has a big fanbase, but not enough people talk about Severance.

Hi! I have come to rec you queer TV shows because I seem to have been watching a lot of shows recently with f/f plots:

  • First Kill. A teen drama that's basically Romeo & Juliet except they're lesbians and also one of them is a vampire from an important vampire family trying to make her first kill, and the other one is a vampire hunter from an important vampire hunter family, also trying to make her first kill. It really pisses their families off when they fall in love.
  • Everything Sucks. Another teen drama, this one a period show set in a high school in the 90s (I feel old). One of the main characters is a lesbian and the story of her coming out is one of the major plotlines of the show.
  • A League of Their Own. Not the movie, the recent TV show. It's about women's baseball teams in the 40s but the show is apparently way more true to real life in that basically everyone was extremely gay all the time. You do not need to know anything about baseball or care about baseball to watch this because it's basically all relationship drama, featuring the most butch women I have ever seen all on the same television show together.
  • Smiley. A Spanish show that kind of has a Queer As Folk feel to it; the main characters are all men but there are some important lesbian supporting characters who are really nice.

These are (at least in the US) all on Netflix, except A League of Their Own which is on Amazon.

Hi, Iron! I'm glad you're in a better place with your new place this year, and I hope things continue to trend upward for you!

Have you read any of Sarah Waters' works? She is a lesbian, and the name of her game is problematic lesbians, usually historical in nature! I actually have only read Fingersmith from her because it's the basis for the movie The Handmaiden which is absolutely in my top 5 queer media ever, but it's grim and ugly and messy and if I can say it in a more tumblr-y way, the characters are cut from that...problematic gaslight gatekeep girlboss cloth :D But I have heard that basically all of her novels are like that, so I think she would definitely be up your alley!

I've heard of her and intended to read one of her books for forever but never gotten around to it. I'm going to have to bump her back to the top of the list now because you've definitely got me sold 😂

Thank for the rec and we'll wishes 💕

AH! I kept coming back to your stocking because I knew that there was a rec I could give you, but couldn't remember what.

https://a.co/d/amLQRUU Alejandra Pizarnik! Now finally translated into English. Have you read her poems? She was a lesbian Argentinian poet of the 60s/70s with a body of work centered on, to quote The Paris Review via Wikipedia, "the limitation of language, silence, the body, night, the nature of intimacy, madness, [and] death".

Happy stocking day!

Have you read A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine? It’s the first in a series(?) of scifi novels (the 2nd is also published and excellent) with a wlw protagonist. She’s an ambassador from a small space station to a big, multi-planet empire, and dealing with the death of the previous ambassador and the interplanetary intrigue of the imperial court. There’s some really interesting things going on with memory and technology that I think will appeal to you.

A very different SFF novel with a wlw protagonist I love is My Real Children by Jo Walton. It also deals with memory, and there is plenty of trauma and angst. Here’s a bit from the publisher’s summary:

It's 2015, and Patricia Cowan is very old. "Confused today," read the notes clipped to the end of her bed. She forgets things she should know—what year it is, major events in the lives of her children. But she remembers things that don’t seem possible. She remembers marrying Mark and having four children. And she remembers not marrying Mark and raising three children with Bee instead. She remembers the bomb that killed President Kennedy in 1963, and she remembers Kennedy in 1964, declining to run again after the nuclear exchange that took out Miami and Kiev.
