stevetony get together
Tony would be lying if he said he was thrilled when Steve asked him out.
It’s not that he was - upset, per say. And it wasn’t like it was a surprise, either. Tony had seen this coming for miles and months, and had been waiting, half on-edge, for Steve to ask him out any time they were left alone together for more than a few seconds.
The problem isn’t that he wants to say no. It’s that he doesn’t. Steve is a great guy, a real golden retriever of a person, so earnest and kind and, yeah, he’s definitely a stubborn dick about a lot of things, but he’s also one of Tony’s best friends. Tony thinks he deserves the world, including any person he wants as his significant other. If that’s Tony - fuck, Tony should be so lucky. And he is. He is so lucky, which is the problem, because he has half a mind to say yes to Steve’s fumbled question just to avoid rejecting him. It might work; Tony’s a lot, Steve might get sick of him before they make it to the bedroom. Because that’s the thing: as promiscuous and experimental as Tony is, and open-minded as people see him as, Tony doesn’t like dick.
It’s a pretty shocking revelation to most people, and one a lot of them don’t believe. Tony thinks he’s one of a very select group of celebrities that the world has more or less quietly assumed to be queer, and moved on without verifying that information. To be fair, Tony sees where they might get that idea; he’s been a part of more than a few orgies in his life, and sometimes, his hands have strayed, but it wasn’t purposeful. It never lasted more than a few minutes, anyway, and it was always laughed off, before Tony flipped back to the tits of whatever supermodel he’d been aiming for when he groped the guys ass, and he’d forgotten about it by morning. Some of them went to the press, probably, or pictures leaked, or whatever it might be; Tony didn’t have an issue with it, really, because he figured, no harm, no foul. If some people think he’s gay, well - hopefully it’ll help some actual queer kids in Cornhole, Nebraska feel like they’re not alone, and, hey, it’s not like it really affects him anyway.
But now.
“Um,” Tony says, and hates himself for the way Steve’s hopeful expression falls. “Shit. I’m sorry, Steve. It’s not you. Literally, I would - I would love to say yes.”
Steve swallows hard, nods once. It sucks, not only because Steve’s disappointed and sad now, but also because it was so brave of him to do this - to put himself out here, to ask Tony out, no ambiguity, no pretense. And this is how Tony rewards that bravery. “I - can I ask why? If you -“ He shakes his head, cutting himself off. “Nevermind, it’s not any of my business -“
“No, hey.” Tony reaches out, careful, and lays a light hand on Steve’s arm. He’s not sure his touch will be welcome, but Steve just slumps, lower lip stuck out in something dangerously close to a pout, and, Jesus fuck. Tony has literally never felt so bad about turning someone down in his life. If he could choose to be gay, he would choose to be gay right now. “It’s nothing you did. Seriously, you’re like, the perfect partner, Steve. It’s me. I’m not gay.”
Now, Steve’s face flickers with something like surprise. “Well, of course you’re not gay,” he says, “You were with Pepper. But aren’t you - sexuality is more fluid now, Natasha said.”
“Well, yeah,” Tony says. “I suppose that’s true for a lot of people. But for me -“ He shrugs. “I’m straight.”
But Steve’s still frowning. “But - all those times, you said -“ He flushes, lightly, but ploughs on, “You said things about, about my chest, or my arms, or my - rear. Was that - was that just a joke?”
“Not really? I mean, kind of, I flirt with everyone, but it was - it was more, uh, aesthetic appreciation, I guess. You’re an artist, you get that, right?”
“Sure,” Steve says, “But what is attraction if it’s not aesthetic appreciation?”
“Well,” Tony fumbles. “It’s - it’s beyond that. You have to like the personality of a person, you know. There’s a whole - whole thing to it, beyond what your body looks like.”
“So you don’t like me?”
“What? No, Steve, of course I - of course, I like you, you’re one of my best friends.”
Steve’s still frowning. “I guess I just don’t get it,” he says. “What the difference gender makes.”
“Well,” Tony tries. “Well, it’s - it’s -“ He’s never had to defend his sexuality like this, and he finds himself weirdly devoid of explanations. What is it, what is the real difference between Steve and, say, Pepper? They’re both hot. They’re both two of Tony’s best friends. They’re both amazing people who anyone would be privileged to date. And yet he would - had - dated Pepper, but Steve is totally outside of his radar. It’s - it can’t just be that Steve has a dick, can it? That feels so simplistic. And wrong. Tony has fucked women across the spectrum of masculine and feminine, has fucked some trans women, before, and it never really mattered that they had dicks, did it? Just like it didn’t matter if the girl he took to bed was butch, or had small breasts, or, or -
It occurs to Tony, suddenly, that he has never kissed a guy before.
Oh shit, Tony thinks. Surely he can’t have - surely he isn’t -
“Steve,” Tony says slowly, “Would you hate me very much if I tested something out right now?”
“Of course not,” Steve says automatically, then, “Tony, what -“
Tony places his hands on either side of Steve’s jaw, and his mouth snaps shut with a click. “I just want to try -“
And he kisses him.
It’s - different, that’s for sure. Steve’s lips are more chapped than any woman Tony’s ever kissed, and the scratch of his beard against Tony’s cheeks is - distracting. Overwhelming. But underneath it, it’s the same familiar movement, lips against lips, mouth again mouth, opening up. There’s the familiar tug in Tony’s chest, in his stomach.
Tony lets the kiss go on for several slow moments before he pulls back. Steve’s eyes are wide and starting blue this close - blue, except for the streak of green in one iris. Tony had never seen that before. A flaw, he thinks, I’ve found one, except it’s not really a flaw at all; Tony knows Steve’s flaws, and they’re not this. They’re being a total smartass who sasses everyone - Tony included - nonstop, and never listens to Fury’s orders, and is way too eager to hop into a fight, physical or otherwise, and -
“Oh my god,” Tony says, hands falling from Steve’s face. “I think I need to sit down.”
Face blank, Steve pulls over a kitchen chair and offers it to him.
Tony falls into it gratefully, and immediately puts his head in his hands. “Oh my god,” he says again. “Was nobody going to tell me?”
“Uh,” Steve says. Tony notes that he sounds gratifyingly distracted, but Tony can’t really appreciate it when he’s distracted as hell himself. “Was anyone going to tell you…” Steve draws it out, a question.
“That I’m gay!” Tony half-yells, voice cracking halfway through, as he throws his hands up in the air. “I feel like someone should have informed me! Would have been good information to have!”
Steve blinks. “I’m sorry?” he says. “I thought you knew.”
“Why?” Tony asks, half hysterical. “Because most other adult humans figured this shit out during puberty? I think we’ve established I’m an exceptionally dense individual!”
Steve nods. “Okay,” he says.
“Shit,” Tony says to himself. “Shit. Fuck. How did I not see this coming? And I call myself a genius. Fuck!”
“You okay?” Steve asks.
“I’m fine,” Tony says automatically. “Peachy. Shit. Just going to be kicking myself over this for, like, ever. Okay, uh, right. Get it together, Tony. Uh, you said - dinner tonight, right?”
“Yes,” Steve says cautiously. “That is what I said.”
“Cool.” Tony pushes himself to his feet, claps his hands together. “Cool. I’ll make a reservation, wear something nice - like, suit nice, I have expensive tastes, let’s be real - or, well, no, maybe a little place would be better, should we go to that Thai place, on 7th, the one whose name I can never remember, it’s, uh, Spring something? Summer something? Something about a season, I think.”
“Hold on,” Steve says, and Tony freezes. “Back up, are you saying - yes?”
“What? Oh, yes, of course, yes, I only said no because I thought I was straight, and, uh, hey! Turns out that’s not true, so that’s cool, and also we should go on a date tonight - unless you’re not interested anymore, which, like, would be sad but also, understandable, I am a hot mess, and I understand if you didn’t realize I was quite this degree of dense until right this moment -“
He’s stopped by a hand on his mouth. Tony blinks up at Steve, who’s flushing again, a pretty light pink. Tony wants to lick him.
My god, he thinks hysterically. How the fuck did I not see this before now?
“You done?” Steve asks, and withdraws his hand when Tony nods. “Tonight would be great. The Thai place is good. Does seven work for you?”
“Yes,” Tony says, and snaps his jaw shut before any other words can come spilling out.
Steve smiles, genuinely pleased. “Cool,” he says. “Um, well, it seems like you need some more time to panic, so I’m going to go to the gym? And, uh, meet you back here at seven?”
“That works.”
“Good. I’ll, uh, see you then.”
“See you then!”
Steve moves as if to go, but at the last second, ducks in and presses a quick kiss to Tony’s cheek, there are gone. Tony barely feels it, and also can’t stop feeling it; his skin tingles where Steve’s lips touched him.
“I look forward to it,” Steve says, quietly and sincerely, and then he’s gone.
“Oh my god,” Tony says again, as soon as the penthouse is empty. “I think I’m having a stroke. Or an existential crisis. Jarvis, call me a therapist. Or Rhodey. Call me Rhodey.”
“Calling Colonel Rhodes, sir,” Jarvis says, and a moment later Rhodey’s familiar brusque tones are on the other end of the line, asking Tony what he’s done now.
Tony smiles at nothing, and keeps smiling, even when Rhodey starts berating him for being the thickest person on the planet. Even Rhodey, apparently, knew Tony was queer - knew it since they were kids at MIT, which is just typical. Tony sure he’s going to get a incredulous speech from Pepper later, too, and maybe Natasha, and Tony really, really doesn’t care, because he has a hot date with Steve Rogers downstairs, who is built like a Greek god, and kind, and it turns out, totally Tony’s type.
Who would have thought?
Re: stevetony get together
(Of course Steve is Tony's type, he just needs a little nudge to realize it :P And I love the call with Rhodey at the end too :D)
H/C Avengers Assemble Ficlet
Notes: Coda to AA s01e06, where they fight Hammer's Adaptoid. Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Panick attack, Established relationship.
“And Thor always drops his guard, like that,” Steve says as he lowers a little, in order to demonstrate his words. Tony is finding it pretty hard to focus on the tactics and moves. He swirls the pencil in his hands as he notes down what Steve’s saying, but his mind is elsewhere.
He should focus on Steve’s words. He’s doing his best to teach him some of the team’s fight moves, some of the ‘gut instinct’ that let him defeat the Adaptoid, and Tony should be grateful and repay him with attention. It’s the least he can do.
Tony is grateful Steve is alive.
His mind keeps going back to the Avenjet in the outer atmosphere. It keeps going back to the heart-clenching horror at the thought of finding Cap unconscious, or worse. The mere thought makes Tony’s heart accelerate and his vision blur a little, and he really should be focusing on something else before Steve notices he’s not paying attention and gives up on teaching him.
“Come out, come out, wherever you are…”
Cap is not here, the hole in the jet is too big, there’s no air and he’s been out here for longer than two minutes, damn his stupid slow suit— “If you’re still alive.” Oh god no. “Oh man, I hope you’re still alive—”
Please be alive, please be alive— “Cap!”
Tony snaps back to the training room.
Steve is still mimicking the Hulk where he attacks with just instincts and no tactic, and he’s doing a masterful impression as always, and Tony would do anything to keep him alive.
The thought of losing him for good makes his breath falter.
“Tony, are you alright?”
Had Tony been paying attention to what Cap was trying to teach him, he would have predicted Cap would eventually catch on to his lack of concentration.
He should have known better. Steve knows him better than most people – heck, he’s probably the person who knows him better than everyone else.
Yet another time he’s let him down.
“Hey, Tony.” Steve’s voice is gentle, and it’s closer to him now. Tony notices he’s been tapping his pencil on his notebook when Steve places his hand on Tony’s and the tapping stops.
Without an outlet to let the pent up adrenaline dissipate, Tony’s heart starts pounding in his chest. He’s barely aware that Steve is speaking, but he can’t make out words, he’s breathing with difficulty and his head is spinning.
Steve went through the lack of air, too, just earlier. And it was Tony’s fault, if only he hadn’t provoked Hammer, if he’d been faster—
“Tony.” Steve’s voice is steady and reassuring, and all Tony wants to do is keep hearing it for the rest of his life.
There are a few old-fashioned things worth keeping around. Steve is the only one Tony truly needs in his life.
“Follow my breathing, honey, c’mon.” Steve’s voice is gentle next to him, and when did he sit down? Gosh, he’s so out of it, he’s making a fool of himself— “Tony. You can do it.”
Tony feels his arms being lifted. At the same time, he feels Steve’s intake of breath and almost senses Steve’s chest expansion, right next to him.
It’s calming. It feels real.
Tony tries to follow Steve’s lead – it’s what Steve wants, he’d do anything Steve wants – and takes a deep breath.
It feels good, it's like time is stretching out impossibly, and just moments before it becomes too much, Steve lowers his arms and exhales next to him, and Tony follows.
That’s how it should be.
Steve was born a leader. Steve should be the leader.
Tony would happily follow him everywhere.
They keep breathing like this for what feels like hours. Tony is trying to will his heart to beat at a steadier pace, but most of his attention is focused on Steve’s warm body next to him, on his breath on his neck, and warmth is good, warmth means life and it means Steve is still with him, he’s not going to leave, and Tony can breathe a little easier with every second passing.
Eventually, Steve lets go of Tony’s arms. Tony instantaneously misses the warmth of his hands – but that’s okay, because Steve is still next to him, and Tony is grateful.
He exhales for the last time before shifting his weight on Steve.
“Better?” Steve asks soft, and his voice is so gentle that Tony almost misses Steve’s arms circling his shoulders and waist, half-hugging him from his right side.
Tony nods and melts in the embrace. He nuzzles his face in Steve’s side and inhales, filling his lungs with Steve’s smell. There’s a hint of floral in there, like his usual shower gel.
It’s Tony’s favorite.
“I’m glad. You had me worried there for a moment.” Steve’s tone is light, but even without looking at his face, Tony can tell he’s still pretty worried.
“That makes two of us today, then,” Tony replies. His voice is thinner than usual, and in any other moment he would find it embarrassing. Right now, he couldn’t care less.
Steve is silent next to him for a couple of seconds before tightening his arms around Tony and shifting a little so that they’re hugging properly now.
Tony is calmer, but his heart still hasn’t returned to a regular rhythm. He takes his own arms around Steve and holds him, tight, like he’s everything that keeps him anchored to reality.
Steve’s right there in his arms.
There’s nowhere Tony would rather be.
“It’s okay, Tony. I’m okay.” Steve’s voice is in his ear, and Tony shivers. “I’m sorry I scared you.”
“It was my fault,” Tony whispers. He knows Steve can hear him anyway. “I should’ve listened to you. Shouldn’t have attacked the Adaptoid like that. I’m sorry.”
“Hey, no, stop that. You had your reasons to believe Hammer was nothing more than an idiot. Unlike me, you knew the guy.” Steve’s still talking in his ear, but now he’s started to caress his back as well, and Tony sighs in happiness.
They should probably get up, but the thought of moving away doesn’t even tempt him.
“And yet I only made it stronger. You were the one— the only one who realized how to take it down.”
“I couldn’t have done it without you and your tech.” Steve’s voice is firm, like he’s trying to prove a point. Steve’s hands are caressing his back, his shoulders, and then sliding up his neck until they’re holding his face.
Tony loosens the embrace but doesn’t move away. Instead, he takes one hand on Steve’s face and looks him in the eyes. “I’m glad you’re okay, Cap.”
Steve’s eyes are gentle as he smiles in his palm. He turns his head a little and kisses Tony’s hand. “I couldn’t really leave you, you know. I love you.”
Tony smiles and bumps his forehead against Steve’s. “I love you too, Steve.”
The kiss they share is soft and reassuring. Steve’s lips are warm and his hands are rubbing circles on his cheeks, and Tony hums contentedly, opening his mouth a little to deepen the kiss. Tony melts against him as Steve’s expert tongue takes him apart and his hands slide in his hair. It’s familiar and teasing and burning hot, and some of the worry slips out of Tony’s mind. He kisses Steve as if trying to burn his taste and the way he feels against his tongue right in his mind. That’s something worth focusing on, in the future, he thinks, light-headed. He's finally happy.
The kiss is perfect and too short at the same time, and when Steve pulls away and whispers, “Let’s go to bed,” Tony only steals another peck before he collects his notebook and pencil, and gets up.
He knows kissing is more comfortable in bed anyway, especially when it leads to something else afterwards.

<333 extract of an a4 fic we talked about <333
This Kang person showing up and giving them a glimpse of the future their doubles experienced… Steve's splintering apart. He doesn't think he's stopped staring at Tony since Kang showed them that terrible vision.
"The other you," Steve says, shakily. "In that footage Kang showed us. He died." Steve's not even sure right now how he's making actual words. He feels gutted, like everything inside of him has been scooped out and thrown across the muddy ground.
"Yeah," Tony says, and shuffles, and that's the moment it hits Steve: Tony doesn't look surprised. He doesn't look surprised at all.
"Tony," Steve asks, unsteadily, "why aren't you surprised?"
"Oh, you know," Tony mumbles, incoherently, suddenly finding a spot on the wall highly interesting. "That's what I do. Take the odds into account. I knew we needed Nebula to go into the past; it was an obvious risk that the Thanos in 2014 would learn about us and take action. We're trying to put all the Infinity Stones in one location; clearly there was a large risk 2014 Thanos would use my own technology to come after them. So there wasn't a choice. I started building that version of the suit as soon as Lang muttered the phrase time heist."
"You never said."
Tony huffs. "I thought about having a snappy conversation about it--"
"Tony."
"But…telling your compatriots that you're heading into war with that you're building something that's got a good shot of becoming your own coffin... I figured it was the kind of mood-killer you don't wanna drop, considering the low odds of success to begin with."
Tony's so matter-of-fact about it. Steve can't feel his own face, but he knows his expression can't be a pleasant one.
"You know, I can't help but be a bit sour about your judgmental expression right now," Tony says, finally looking Steve in the eyes. "It's not like you and I have been especially chatty of late. And sure, there's….somewhat shared blame in that. But I'm used to you not being around to tell things to."
"Planning to die is still one of those things you talk about, no matter how...awkward things are."
"Dying wasn't plan A," Tony growls. "It was just a plan."
"God, you're infuriating. I just had to watch you die, Tony, I--"
"Hey, c'mon."
Exasperated doesn't cover how Steve is feeling right now.
"That wasn't me," Tony says.
Steve shoots Tony an angry glare. "Really?"
"Nah," Tony moves closer, smiling tentatively at him. "That was just some other handsome dumb ass." Steve makes a scoffing noise, but Tony steps closer and takes one of Steve's hands between his own. "I'm right here. See?"
Steve stares mutely as Tony lifts Steve's hand to rest on Tony's neck. It is more soothing than Steve would like, to feel a steady pulse under his fingertips.
"Hey, look," Tony murmurs, looking up at Steve with a mischievous smirk. "We're in premium make-out position. How about that."
Exasperated is starting to fit more as a descriptive word, because Tony is, as always, a stunning combination of beautifully annoying and hella manipulative. "Smooth," Steve compliments, letting an amused wryness thicken his tone. "Tell me. How often does a move like this one work for you?"
"Oh, it's got a hundred percent success rate so far." Tony squints. "Do you want to wreck my batting average? That would be mean. Apparently I just died to save the universe."
Steve flashbacks to that terrible vision: Tony kneeling, bleeding, staring up at Thanos with beautiful defiance, snapping his fingers…
"Shut up about that," Steve breathes, desperate to stop thinking about it.
Tony flashes him a heated look.
"Oh, I'm starting to want you to make me," Tony says, in his quoting voice.
And, well, they are in premium make-out position, Tony's right about that, so Steve gives in to the urge to kiss him.
As far as methods of shutting up Tony go, it's pretty damn good.
Re: <333 extract of an a4 fic we talked about <333
You already know how much I love this but I just need to yell about it again - Steve reacting badly to the Kang's vision while Tony isn't surprised at all, and then they actually get to talk about it!!
"You know, I can't help but be a bit sour about your judgmental expression right now," Tony says, finally looking Steve in the eyes. "It's not like you and I have been especially chatty of late. And sure, there's….somewhat shared blame in that. But I'm used to you not being around to tell things to." --- I just loved this, Tony's voice is perfect and yeah they're not used to the other person being around but now they are, and there's a second chance for something better (and make-outs :D)
"We're in premium make-out position. How about that." --- SUCH AN AWESOME TONY LINE AHHHH :D
"Oh, I'm starting to want you to make me," Tony says, in his quoting voice.
And, well, they are in premium make-out position, Tony's right about that, so Steve gives in to the urge to kiss him. --- 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
