I've used polenta in place of cornmeal before, as I'm in the UK. But I think cornmeal is a a little bit finer in texture – I was able to grab a bag in the Caribbean section of my local supermarket.
I actually never made it in the same pot – I seem to lack a pot of the right size that goes on both the hob and in the oven. This is one of my wife's favourite's and it's very filling. We like to eat it with sour cream on the side.
