The morning after, Johnny jumped out of bed. He opened the curtains with a flourish, before crawling back on the bed next to the curled-up figure with a mess of brown hair peeking out over the covers. Johnny lifted them and smacked a wet kiss on Peter's cheek. Peter groaned and jerked away, pulling the covers over his head.

“It's bright,” he whined.

“Because your sunshine, your only sunshine's here,” Johnny crooned.

Peter's head, then the rest of his face peeked out from under the bedsheets, and he squinted at Johnny. His bedhead was positively adorable, and Johnny was looking forward to seeing them for many mornings to come. That was what was expected after mutual sweeping declarations of love, even if Peter swore to the Negative Zone and back that said declarations were made under duress.

“I hate you so much right now,” Peter said.

“But you love me.” Even the embarrassing and god forbid, girlish giggle that escaped him with those words couldn't dampen Johnny's spirits.

“I hate myself even more for that.”

“Sure you do, lover-boy. Lover-man-spider.” It took most of his will-power not to jump back onto the bed as Johnny scrambled onto the sheets, bracketing Peter with his limbs.

Peter’s eyes didn’t budge from his, even as the flush spread deliciously down his body. “I can’t believe I’m in love with you. I’m being punished.”

“Ooh, tell me more.” Johnny waggled his eyebrows as Peter tried to scowl, his lips fighting the smile. Johnny had no such issue, grinning wide when Peter put his hand around Johnny's neck to pull him down into a kiss.

You mentioned you liked my idea for EMH long pining, and everything that isn't my MTH fill has been put on indefinite hold, so I wrote kinda like an excerpt for it. Set very early in EMH canon, sometime right after Steve joined the team. I hope you enjoy my soft thing! Happy Holidays!!


Steve has been in the future for two weeks, and he feels like he has it all figured out now.

The future is Tony Stark.

Tony has single-handedly designed one of the four major supervillain prisons. (It was broken out of before Steve was unfrozen, but he’s been reading about it. Impressive doesn’t even cover it.) Stark is the brand of the new smartphone that’s so good and reliable, people swear by it. Stark Industries is the company that’s always in the news. Tony Stark can reliably be found on billboards, newspapers, and gossip mags. Tony is the one funding the Avengers, the one leading them, clothing them, and offering them all a home in return for virtually nothing.

The same Tony Stark who decided that Steve needs a new suit.

Steve grips the handrails of the car and tries not to scream, while Tony cuts through traffic like a knife through butter. Or like a butcher’s knife through meat; strong, brutal, and efficient. He’s bobbing his head along to the song on the stereo, not that Steve can figure out anything pleasant about the song. It has harsh, loud sounds, accompanying a man’s harsh screaming. It’s not nice. It is loud, annoying and horrible. But Steve can see the way it makes Tony’s eyes light up, the way they do when he has a brilliant idea, and for that alone Steve likes it.

“Oh, is the music bothering you?” Tony asks, taking his eyes off the road for a moment. It’s too fast for Steve to scream at him to focus on the damn road; if you’re going to drive (expertly) like a maniac, then you damn well better focus.

“No, it’s fine,” Steve says, hoping he doesn’t sound too winded.

“God, I’m sorry. You’ve been in the future for like, a week and I decide to hit you with AC/DC’s finest; not the best decision, I know. Here, lemme—”

“It’s fine,” Steve snaps.

Tony’s hand hovers just above the radio, before he pulls his hand back.

“Sorry,” Steve mutters.

“It’s fine.”

“No, really. It’s just… you don’t have to keep treating me with kid gloves. I’m … in the future now. I guess if this is the music now, I may as well get used to it. You can’t keep me holed up in my room forever.”

Tony smiles. He looks like he’s shooting for suave and confident, but ends up looking very sincere. Steve thinks about that a lot.

“Yeah,” Tony admits, “maybe we’ve been trying to protect you a bit too much from this. It’s just… hey, you’re Captain America! You were my hero growing up.” Tony bites his lip. “You’re… my hero now. I… we all just want to do right by you.”

Steve clears his throat, awkwardly. “You did more than do right by me,” he offers. His voice comes out too hoarse, too awkward. He clears his throat again. “You… you gave a job, a purpose… a home. I can’t thank you enough.”

Tony just waves his praise off. “Pfft, come on, that was like, rank selfishness more than anything else. Of course, we would be ecstatic to have Captain America on the team! If anything, I’m unfairly taking advantage of you.”

Yes, because adding a new member to the superhero team that Tony is funding single-handedly, and very much not profiting from, is the height of selfishness. Steve isn’t sure how to respond.

“Thanks anyway,” Steve says.

“Don’t mention it. Seriously. Now, come on. You,” Tony points his finger at Steve, glancing over for just a millisecond. Steve’s heart jumps, and it’s now anyone’s guess over what caused it: Tony’s eyes on him, or Tony’s eye not on the road. “You need a new suit. But first, overpriced, overhyped, and overly sugary coffee!”

Steve, who has never been too crazy about coffee, grins like it’s his favorite thing in the world. Maybe it will be. It is, after all, the same color of Tony’s eyes.

It takes a long time, but Steve finally gets to see Tony’s eyes in broad sunlight, and not in suspicious neon lights or cloudy days. Tony has taken his helmet off after a hard fight with the Wrecking Crew, and he’s now grinning up at Steve from where he’s sitting on a piece of debris. Steve’s heart jumps so hard, it must bruise the inside of his chest.

His eyes have always been big and expressive, and Steve has secretly been cataloging his every twitch, every blink, every light that changes his entire expression. But this is wholly new; when his eyes are in the sunlight, apparently, they sparkle. Deep brown eyes with golden flecks, like the most exquisite tiger’s eye jewel. The whole world falls away, and all Steve can focus on are the details, the way his eyes are ringed by darkness, but in the middle is a vortex or light and dark brown lines, and hints of gold shining through just so, and Steve just…

“Steve!” Tony is laughing. It occurs to Steve that he might have been trying to get his attention.

“Huh? What?” Steve is an idiot who couldn’t impress people if his life depended on it. The serum made everything stronger, including, it seems, his ability to make a fool of himself in front of pretty people.

The upside to all of this is that Tony is laughing. Even when he’s laughing at Steve, his eyes are still bright and intelligent and so alive. It’s sometimes too much just to look at them, but Steve gladly burns himself every time. “I was saying we should get pizza.”

“Yes,” Steve replies immediately, so fast he almost strains something.

“Great, I’ll call the team.”

Steve rocks back on his heels, and lets his weight rest on the balls of his feet again. Right, yes, the team. The one that exists. Steve looks up, and finds Jan and Clint staring right at him. They look like they were laughing. Oh, God have mercy.
